Key idea

Personal hygiene means habits that keep your body clean. Wash hands with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Brush teeth twice daily. Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue or your bent elbow, then clean your hands. Sanitation protects shared surroundings: clean toilets, safe drinking water, proper waste disposal, and clean food areas help reduce the spread of germs. These habits lower risk; they do not prevent every illness. First aid is immediate help when someone is injured or suddenly ill. Check for danger, get a responsible adult, and call emergency services for serious problems. Do not touch someone still in contact with electricity. Trouble breathing, severe bleeding, or unresponsiveness needs urgent help.
