Concept

Key idea

In a series combination, resistors are connected end to end. The same current flows through each resistor, and total resistance is R_s=R₁+R₂+.... In a parallel combination, each resistor has the same potential difference across it. The equivalent resistance is given by 1/R_p=1/R₁+1/R₂+.... Parallel circuits are used in homes because each appliance gets full voltage and can be controlled independently.
