Lesson
Face value is the original printed value of a share and is used to calculate dividends. Market value is the price at which a share is currently traded in the stock market, and it changes constantly based on demand and supply. Shares may trade at a premium (above face value) or at a discount (below face value). The difference between these values helps investors understand whether the share is expensive or affordable relative to its actual profitability.
