If the common ratio r satisfies |r| < 1, the terms of the GP become smaller and smaller, approaching zero. In such cases, the sum to infinity is given by S∞ = a/(1 − r). This formula shows that an infinite number of terms can still have a finite total because each term shrinks rapidly.
